The Harms Caused by Automobile Exhaust

In the busy streets, a lot of light blue smoke is emitted from the tails of the motor vehicles, which is commonly referred to as automobile exhaust. Fourth, hydrocarbons
At present, people are not clear about the direct harms of hydrocarbons on human health. However, when nitrogen oxides react with hydrocarbons under the action of ultraviolet, they will produce a kind of light blue smoke, which include ozone, aldehydes, nitric acid and many other complex compounds. The most prominent harm of this photochemical smog on human body is the stimulation on the eyes and the mucosa membrane of upper respiratory tract, which may lead to eye irritation and laryngitis.

Guide to Car Exhaust System Repairs

Fire means smoke and smoke or emissions is produced by the controlled explosions in the car's engine. The exhaust system of a car is supposed to remove these emissions and clean them as much as possible before releasing them in the atmosphere. When the car's exhaust system does not do this job then it has to be replaced.

Some of the components of the exhaust system can be simply replaced with a wrench but others need welding equipment. Clamps can be used to cinch down joints between components. Working on the exhaust system requires getting it up on safety stands, blocking the wheels and crawling below.

Manifold Life of an Exhaust System
The exhaust system collects exhaust gasses as they leave the cylinders of the engine and then those gasses are piped to the catalytic converter through the exhaust pipe. Cars with all cylinders have one exhaust manifold. The exhaust system can become cracked or warped from excessive engine heat. If the exhaust is escaping from places it didn't before then the exhaust manifold may need to be replaced. Mostly the gasket seals between the manifold and the engine block have to be replaced when repairing an exhaust manifold.

For repairing an exhaust manifold, follow this guide:
First, locate the exhaust manifold on the car, find the exhaust muffler and pipe under the car and trace it where it attaches to the exhaust manifold. Remove the bolts that connect the exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifold output. A long half inch socket wrench driver is needed to loosen the bolts. After removing them, the gaskets should be checked and replace it if necessary. Remove the bolts that attach the manifold to the engine block. Remove the exhaust manifold and gasket from the engine carefully. After that, reinstall the exhaust pipe to the manifold output, replacing the gasket.

For replacing an exhaust pipe, follow this guide:
First, loosen and remove the bolts holding the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Then loosen and remove hangers holding the exhaust pipe to the under the car making sure it will not fall. Now replace the exhaust pipes and reconnect to the system. If you are replacing the muffler, catalytic converter or resonator, then do it while replacing the pipes. It is a job which deserves a treat when completed.

Keeping the Environment Clean of Auto Emissions
A car normally has 1.625 scads of emissions-control devices hidden in its nooks and crannies. The exhaust gas recirculation system returns exhaust gases to the engine for re-burning. The evaporative emissions control system recycles fuel vapors. The positive crankcase ventilation system re-circulates gases from the oil pan to the intake manifold. Diagnosing emission failures, using the exhaust gas analyzer can be a task. Auto repair is constantly evolving and has become a technical field to work in. Using the proper knowledge, you can find the right auto mechanic to repair your emission failure and be on the road to a cleaner atmosphere along with a fatter wallet. Here we will examine carbon emissions and 5-gas analysis.

Lambda, Combustion Efficiency, Carbon Gases, CAT Efficiency and EVAP Emissions:

- Lambda is perfect air fuel ratio 14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. The closer you get to Lambda, the less carbon emissions. - Hydrocarbons or (HC), this gas is will be seen usually with an ignition problem. HC is read in parts per million or grams per mile. It is the reading of partially burned fuel escaping the tail pipe. Both of these carbon emission gases can be easily diagnosed, using the correct procedure and checks, including your Lambda Numbers.

- Oxides of Nitrogen or (NOX), A gas that has been known to cause acid rain. NOX basically boils down to Cylinder pressure or temperature. The more pressure or heat in the cylinder the higher the NOX will be. If a cylinder exceeds 2,500 degrees the vehicle will produces excessive NOX. This can be achieved in different ways including the exhaust gas recirculation or (EGR) system.

- Catalytic Converter or (CAT) efficiency, the catalytic converter is the most important emissions component on a vehicle with an internal combustion engine. The CAT cleans the carbon emissions to virtually zero when it is 100% efficient. Engineers have created an Ozone preserving automotive part, which needs to be in excellent operating condition.

- Evaporative Emissions or (EVAP) one of the most complicated emission repairs, if you do not have the training and equipment. EVAP emissions pollutes the Ozone 10 times more the vehicles tailpipe because to the CAT. Evaporative Emissions is actual fuel vapor that is creating carbon gases. Gasoline is a huge carcinogen, which means it causes cancer and is very harmful, be careful gassing up your ride. The invention of the catalytic converter has significantly reduced tailpipe emissions therefore EVAP emissions is now the major contributor to carbon gases. I have experienced many different problems concerning the EVAP system and have a great skill for Evaporative system diagnosis.

Most importantly, find the proper auto repair facility to diagnose and repair harmful emissions failures. Not only will this preserve our Ozone, it will also save you money. The best way to locate a great auto mechanic is to look at their emissions work. If they are poor on diagnosing carbon emission failures and do not have a 5-gas analyzer, then they do not have the training and or equipment to diagnose a drive ability problem or check engine light. I have worked on cars all of my life and currently perform quality auto repair. In this article I have examined carbon emissions and 5-Gas analysis.

Diesel Turbo Back Exhaust - Will it Cause Me to Lose Low End Torque and Horsepower?

Myth #1 - If I install a 4" turbo back exhaust I will lose all my low end torque.

This is one of those subjects with questions we get almost daily. It takes several forms:
- I read on the internet forums that you will lose all your low end power if you install a 4" turbo back exhaust.
- My friend installed an exhaust on his truck and now it doesn't have the same power it did on take off.
- A diesel engine needs backpressure and if you open the exhaust up too much it will hurt my engine.
- A diesel engine needs back pressure and if I open up the exhaust I will lose power.

Due to the relative low cost of a turbo back exhaust, and the amount of diesel owners looking for a little more power, this is a very popular subject. First things first, a turbocharged diesel engine does not need so much as pound of back pressure after the turbo to perform perfectly. In fact, the less restriction after the turbo, the better. You have to understand that between the exhaust port on the head and the inlet of the turbocharger there is usually back pressure of at least equal if not more than boost pressure on the engine at all times. Any back pressure the engine needs for proper function is provided before the turbo, period. Pressure on the outlet side of the turbo just leads to higher exhaust gas temps. When we install a

four or five inch turbo back exhaust system, we see several things. First is usually a large drop in exhaust gas temperatures. A 100-300 degree or more drop is not uncommon. Second is an increase in fuel mileage. If the engine doesn't have to work to push the spent exhaust gasses out of the tail pipe (we learned in the first article that an engine is nothing more than an air pump), it can use that horsepower to help turn the flywheel and transfer more power to the ground. And third, we will usually see somewhere between 15-30 rear wheel horsepower increase on the dyno when upgrading from a completely stock exhaust.

So what about the internet forums, your buddy, or even you that noticed less performance of the line after installing a high flow diesel exhaust system? Well, you're not crazy and your buddy isn't a liar. The reason for the low end loss on some trucks is from a loss in exhaust gas temps. A turbocharger is driven by pressure and heat. The hotter the exhaust gas, the more it will expand and drive the turbo. If we install a free flowing exhaust that lowers those temperatures, we will see slightly slower spool up all things being equal. Where there was a restriction in the stock exhaust before that caused the exhaust gas temps to be higher at all times, now the temps drop quickly and they have to warm up before the turbo will spool fast again. Is this a huge deal? No.

Most people who have added some sort of programmer that increases low end fueling will never notice it. Also, this slower spool up is more noticeable on standard transmission trucks than automatics due to being able to operate in lower rpm ranges at will. Also, this "loss in low end torque" is usually only noticeable when the truck is cold or has sat idling for a few minutes. Once the engine reaches normal operating temperatures, you should never notice it at all. What you should notice is increased horsepower, increased fuel mileage, and lower exhaust gas temps.
